Coordination between the professionals of the different services that attend to people who use drugs or who have problematic drug use is essential to be able to provide adequate responses to their problems, optimize resources and provide better quality care to users.
The aim of this article is to analyze in broad outline the functioning of a specialized local network (in drug dependence care) and its coordination with municipal and county social services and primary community care. Based on the practice of social work in the Addictions and Mental Health Service of the HUSJR (CAS), in the Activity Centre “La Illeta” and the experience in coordination, we have reflected on the need and form of coordination and how it could be improved. Coordination allows the different actors to get to know each other, to approach a problem holistically and to favor the access of all people to normalized resources.
This requires systematization, the establishment of referral mechanisms between specialized centers and primary care, as well as a good understanding between the different care departments, such as the Department of Coordination, networking, addictions and mental health, social services, social inclusion, social work, complexity, welfare state, Department of Labour, Social Affairs and Families.
It is necessary to have an impact on the reduction of social inequalities, bearing in mind that social aspects are determining factors in people’s health.
