This book presents a model of sociocultural analysis of the use of cocaine from the identification of different spaces and forms of consumption from the perspective of Critical Medical Anthropology and the philosophy of Harm and Risk Reduction. Various cultural and structural variables that influence the health of consumers are being deconstructed, as well as the maintenance of their social functions and relations.
The text is based on ethnographic fieldwork, guided by phenomenological theories and symbolic interactionism, carried out over a year and a half and complemented by 36 in-depth interviews with consumers.
The main results have been to understand how the spaces of consumption shape the experience and the conditions of risk where these practices are carried out, while at the same time making visible how socio-structural factors have an impact on the health and social positioning of consumers.
To conclude, five concrete proposals for collective health measures are presented, based on training on psychoactive substances, the creation of spaces for self-organization and the implementation of services to reduce risks and harm.
