Main objective:

The primary objective of this research is to study the psychosocial and motivational dimensions of Spanish youth as precipitating or protective factors in sports betting and gambling.

Summary:

The study responds to the need to generate quantitative knowledge based on a survey of a statistically significant sample of the Spanish gambling population. The study analyses the motivational, attitudinal and psycho-environmental aspects that lead or protect young people from gambling. The working hypothesis is that the greater the environmental exposure and the greater the motivational predisposition towards sports betting and gambling, the greater the risk of problem gambling and the development of pathological gambling disorder. Another hypothesis of the study is that certain socio-demographic variables, such as personal income level, purchasing power of the family of origin, socialisation environment and plutocratic value system, are independent variables that modify certain dependent variables, such as perception, cognitive schemas and motivation towards gambling. As a result, gambling behaviour is trivialised and the risk of developing a problem gambling disorder increases. Finally, in the study we worked to find out how age of onset, as an independent variable, acts as a catalyst for problem gambling. Knowing these data will allow us to obtain reliable knowledge on how to address prevention among young people, especially the most effective environmental measures. In order to test these hypotheses, research has carried out the “Survey on Sports Betting and Gambling in Spain, 2022”, the first statistical operation aimed exclusively at the gambling population, with the aim of studying the motivational, attitudinal and psycho-environmental aspects that influence gambling behaviour, with particular interest in the gender perspective and in the young population.
