Talking about the normalization and regulation of consumption necessarily involves reviewing concepts related to health such as addiction, corporeality/pleasure and self-care/self-medication. When referring to the different uses of cannabis or other substances, it is common to talk about medicinal use, self-care or self-medication in health, all of which are structural processes in any society. The use of psychoactive substances responds to both concepts (self-care and self-medication) either as “empirical remedies or as symbolic elements (in the context of multiple social rituals), or both at the same time”. In this article we will see how these concepts provide us with an interesting analytical opportunity to describe different forms of consumption.
